Exploring Students’ Graphical Understanding of the Derivative Using Quantitative Reasoning

Graphical representations provide a powerful means for developing a conceptual understanding of the derivative. Yet, research has shown that students struggle to interpret graphs in connection with symbolic representations (Nagle et al., 2019; Zandieh, 2000). In this study, students participated in task-based interviews with an experienced mathematics professor. By focusing on quantitative reasoning elements, students were able to bridge graphical and symbolic understandings of the derivative. Our findings offer insight on how graphical tasks coupled with prompting can create meaningful opportunities for students to understand fundamental derivative concepts.
